Beyond Blogging: Science engagement online can do more!

I’m making this very quick post as twitter is awash today with people protesting about Vince Cable’s remarks on proposed science budget cuts.

Back in July Shane and I went to Alice Bell’s excellent talkfest on science blogging. Shane then wrote this typically provocative post about how the bloggers weren’t being ambitious enough – why did nobody want to change the world?

Blogs are fantastic, not to diss blogs at all, but there’s a lot more that can be done online than writing blog posts. We decided that instead of just whinging, we should put our money where our mouth is, and do something to help!

We are now planning a workshop/get-together called Beyond Blogging. This would bring together people from the worlds of science, science communication and engagement, with some of the hackers and doers involved in civil society online engagement, to see what interesting ideas and projects could be sparked off by it.

The event will be on 20th October, in central London. If you are interested in taking part, or have ideas about who we should invite, please let us know in the comments.

Argh, a Wednesday! Suppose it has to be weekdays if it’s in the centre really. Would hope to be able to make it, look forward to some more details.

  2. Nick’s avatar

Would have been interested, but on a Wednesday during term time…. so, can’t make it.

  3. Beck Smith’s avatar

I’ll be there with bells* on.

    *Probably not true.

  4. Stephen Curry’s avatar

Would have been there but not in the country on that date, alas. Would certainly like to be kept informed.

I will be there, but not as one of Beck’s bells :)

  6. Mun Keat’s avatar

    I’d be up for that.

  7. Jonathan Sanderson’s avatar

    I’m in.

    No bells, please, I’m British.

  8. Paula Salgado (@pssalgado)’s avatar

Count me in. A few ideas already growing… can’t wait.

Excellent, it should be an interesting event! Anyone got suggestions of not-usual-suspects to invite who will bring different ideas? (Not that you lot won’t, but you know what I mean).

Hopefully the civil society types will bring a very different perspective, of course. But are there people with v different ideas about science and science engagement, perhaps?

How about people involved in online learning, or in teaching? Someone with a bit of theory about pedagogy, maybe – I’m always struck by what a great resource teaching is.

I liked the chap at SoLo10 (David Ng) who talked about crowdsourcing a biodiversity project.

Hi Alison, yep, I loved David Ng and def plan to invite him. Am also planning a couple of teachers, but I don’t know who’s who in online pedagogy. Was hoping you’d bring some learning theory perspective!

PS, Jonathan, are you dissing the great British tradition of Morris dancing?

I only came here because I kept getting web alerts for the title of my book “Beyond Blogging.” I thought we’d cracked the world of science.

Anyway, good luck with the workshop!

Could be interesting … I’m a science teacher (2 time IaS alumnus ;) ), a national HE STEM programme school teacher fellow and am heavily involved in e-learning at Bath Uni at the moment so this sounds kind of up my street :)

I agree with the other guys though … if you’re involved in university outreach, Wednesdays are an appalling choice of day!

If nothing else it’d probably be good to meet up at some point Sophia as I think you guys are nearby. I’ll give you a call tomorrow.

Would definitely be interested to come along, assuming I can escape work for the day etc.

    I’ll try to be there.
